Implementation - How we teach what we teach

We shape our DT curriculum to ensure it is fully inclusive to all our children. We teach the requirements of the National Curriculum by mapping key knowledge and skills across the school to ensure progression between year groups. Our DT curriculum is broad, balanced and differentiated with links to other relevant subjects wherever possible.

DT at New Close is often taught in blocks so that children’s learning is focused throughout each unit of work. Through a variety of creative and practical activities, we teach the knowledge and skills needed to engage in the process of designing and making.  The children evaluate existing products, design and create their own products that consider function and purpose followed by an opportunity to evaluate and analyse their own work.  Further opportunities for DT are planned and spaced across the year so that the children’s knowledge and skills are revisited, embedded and built upon.
