Implementation - How we teach what we teach

Our PE curriculum is tailored to support our range of learners that we have here at New Close Primary School. The long-term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met for Early Years (starting with simple ball skills and locomotion activities etc.) right through to Year 6 (with more advanced invasion games and putting a sport into practise).

Pupils participate in two high quality PE lessons each week. PE at New Close is taught by a sports leader provided by our trust. This allows the children to receive input from a specialist coach. The children then have an additional lesson taught by teaching staff.

We provide children the opportunity to attend extra curricular clubs at lunch times and after school. Children are also invited to attend competitive sporting events within our trust and West Wiltshire. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.

Each year we select a sports council/sports leaders to develop sporting role models for the younger children. We provide the opportunity for some year 6 children to become a Sports Young Ambassador which aims to empower and inspire young people to become leaders through sport, helping to encourage their inactive peers to become hooked on sport. The programme aims to recruit, train, deploy and celebrate the outstanding individuals who volunteer their time in sport.

In addition to PE lessons and clubs, we actively seek to provide our students with workshops to explore sports/activities that are not taught within our lessons by inviting in external companies/professionals. This widens their knowledge and chance to have a go at different sports.
