Intent- Why we teach what we teach

At New Close Primary School, we believe that Physical Education (PE), experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and good health. Our PE curriculum teaches children how to work independently as well as cooperatively and collaboratively as part of an effective team, whilst developing an understanding of fairness and equity of play. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and develop and embed important life values and skills as they progress in their PE lessons through the school. Throughout their time with us, our children will experience a range of different sports and will learn to swim.

At New Close, we follow ‘Complete PE’ which progresses children through a number of skills in different sports through each year group. Our lessons are adapted and tailored for the needs and abilities of our children. We want children to grow to love keeping active and understanding the importance of this and how it impacts other elements of their life. Our curriculum aims to improve the well-being and fitness of all children at New Close, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes. Our PE curriculum supports the learning pathway to support the development of the whole child in each activity.
