The Writing Intent - Why we teach what we teach

The overarching aim for English in the national curriculum is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written language, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.

At New Close Primary School the teaching of writing is a fundamental part of our whole school curriculum as all subject areas use and develop this skill. We want children to enjoy writing with the eventual aim for them to be able to write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences which engages the interest of the reader. Attention is paid throughout the school to the formal structures of English, grammatical detail, punctuation, spelling and handwriting. Our use of high-quality texts, vocabulary-rich learning environments and a varied and engaging curriculum ensure the progression of skills are met whilst developing a love of, creative and purposeful writing.
